Cast iron plaque of the Dunera...

We have a possible answer to the question below!! Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at 20:33:00

Mr. Chan: In Dec., I recd. request from U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for artifacts, testimonials, etc. You can look at their donations web page: http://www.ushmm.org/research/collections/donation/ I’m certain they will appreciate your inquiry as to the authenticity of your Dunera plaque.
Thanks!

24/11/07...Paddy Taylor is looking for Rev. Peter Vickers.....any answers here, please...
I was stunned to discover a web site devoted to the Dunera. In August/Sept 1941 my mother, brother and I left Suez for South Africa. My father was on active service in Egypt while we three went to S.Africa to avoid the escalating war in the Middle East. We had adventures on the way but arrived safely in Durban having first stopped in East London to discharge several hundred Italian prisoners. How may I contact Rev. Peter Vickers who has his story on your website....Here.... He was obviously on the same voyage.
Paddy Taylor.

Any help here would be welcome – email address provided

15/10/07...Barry Zwart is looking for information about a friend – Jim Hatchman.
I sailed to Malta early in 1960 with a national service intake of the Royal Fusiliers. I was a friend of Jim Hatchman and would like to contact him if possible. We served in Malta and North Africa, before returning to the UK in 1961 on the Dunera. We were told that this was the last time that she was to be used as a troop transport

13/11/07...this site has had an excellent success here!!
Hi Mike, I passed on the e–mail you sent me to my father regarding a gentleman who was looking for him on the web site MS Dunera, they have since contacted each other and have swapped pictures of themselves when they were younger and were in the army together, my father has told me stories of when he was on the ship and how good mates they both were, thank you again for giving him the chance to get in touch with his friend because with out this web site they would never of got the chance,
kind regards
S Skinner [Hatchman]

How great is that!! This site does have a purpose!!

23/09/07...Brenda Ballantyne has emailed with a message to Marilyn Williams (Marilyn’s message here)

I was at Firrhill school Edinburgh and sailed on the first Dunera cruise to Corunna Lisbon and Gibralter. I think the teacher in charge of us was Miss McIntosh. We left on the 12th of April the same day Yuri Gagarin went into space!
Email address suppied..but I'm afraid I don't have Marilyn's email address - let's hope we can get you both in touch - please do mail into the site and we'll see what we can do!

25/09/07...This message is for Jennifer:

My father was also on the Dunera (Georg Rapp). I wrote a novel based, very closely on the historical facts. The Sandbeetle. You’ll find a lot of info in that.
All best

J.B. Loucks has emailed me with an observation that has me wondering!
I recently came across a photo of the H.M.T Dunera that looks much different than others I’ve seen, in that it has 3 masts. I have the photo on Ebay now if anyone is interested in looking at it. Thank you. J.B. Loucks

This reminded me!......I also had a similar observation that mentioned the picture at the top left – apparently it’s the wrong ship!! I have unfortunately lost the email that contained the observation. Please can you write in again or can anyone else help here...?
Many thanks – Mike

Blogspot!! (New window) Have a look at this area and see if we can get some ‘live’ contacts going here..

Now – I never sailed on the Dunera! But I do find the contacts we have here very interesting. I hope you do too.

Whilst a Blog is normally supposed to be something set up by, say, me for me to write my life history and life trials and achievements in for all the world to see, I wouldn’t inflict that on you and I wondered if we could use it to the Dunera site’s advantage! You guys post comments and if it starts another thread of discussion – I’ll set it out as such...

Whether I’m actually making sense here is probably open to debate – just go over there and have a look and comment if you wish
